Karen Walsh began her Urology Nurse career at the Royal Brisbane Hospital in the early 1990s and worked for over 30 years in various urology units around Brisbane. She combined studying, working and raising teenagers as a mature-aged student to gain her Masters (NP) degree, and most recently worked in a unique role as a Nurse Practitioner/Robotic Assistant at both St Vincent’s Northside and Metro North’s Surgical Treatment and Rehabilitation Service (STARS). Known as ‘Walshie’ by most of her colleagues, her fun loving and bubbly personality put patients’ minds at ease on the day of surgery. Her goal was to continue to grow the urology services and had a vision to run NP post-operative services to alleviate the strain on the surgeons she assisted.

Karen was a dedicated and valued member of QUNS, Inc. and the Queensland Section of ANZUNS, and held a variety of executive roles including secretary and state representative. Karen was a highly influential and well-respected Urology Nurse & mentored a large number of nurses over many years. She was a great role model and encouraged lifelong learning.

Devastatingly, Karen was diagnosed & quickly succumbed to a glioblastoma multiforme brain tumour in June 2024. To honour Karen’s life and her dedication to QLD Urology nursing, the QLD Section of ANZUNS Committee is proud to offer the Karen Walsh ANZUNS Memorial Grant. This annual $1,000 grant is designed to support the awardee’s attendance at the ANZUNS ASM, while keeping the memory of Karen’s significant contribution to Urology Nursing alive.  This grant is only available to QLD Section members.

Pleases complete the attached form and submit by 17/01/25 and the winner will be notified by 24/01/25.  The awardee will be reimbursed $1000 when the Qld Section of ANZUNS receives receipt of registration and other costs.
