The Nurse Practitioner (NP) is the most senior and expert clinical nurse within their area of practice in the Hospital and Health Service. They are an integral member of the multidisciplinary health care team who practices autonomously but in collaboration with others to assess and manage patients within their clinical context using expert nursing knowledge and skills at an advanced level based on the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia – Registered Nurse Standards of Practice.

The SCHHS Urology Service provides expert planned surgical and emergent response urological care. The SCUH is the major referral hospital for the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service (SCHHS) for emergency and elective urological cases and provides expertise in care to patients across the health service. The SCHHS delivers urological services via a hub and spoke model. The service is centrally run from the SCUH, and support is provided to ‘spoke’ units at Nambour General Hospital (NGH), Gympie Health Service (GHS) and Maleny Soldiers Memorial Hospital (MSMH).

The NP is accountable for clinical practice, professional advice given and delegations of care and contributes expert nursing assessment and advice to achieve integrated nursing care within a risk management and best practice framework.

The NP will primarily provide direct expert nursing care and will initiate, implement and monitor relevant continence and urology related interventional therapies and interpret diagnostic pathology as part of the role which also includes the authority to prescribe medications and initiate direct referrals to other healthcare professionals.

The NP will take a lead role in ensuring targets are met in an efficient and effective manner which will include collaborating with the multidisciplinary partners to ensure patients receive the most appropriate care in the most appropriate place by the most appropriate personnel. It is therefore important that the successful applicant can demonstrate expert knowledge and skills as well as the ability to communicate effectively, work well in a team environment and influence change.

The Nurse Practitioner – Urology (Continence), reports to the Nursing Director, Inpatient Units – Surgery and Critical Care.
